As the global textile industry accelerates its shift toward sustainability, a new fiber is emerging from an unexpected source: juncao grass. Originally developed for ecological restoration and mushroom cultivation, juncao is now being processed into textile fibers — and the results are remarkable.
Juncao (literally "grass for fungi") refers to several fast-growing grass species developed through decades of research, primarily in China. While juncao has been widely used in agriculture, forestry, and livestock feed since the 1980s, its application in textile fiber production is a more recent breakthrough.
The fiber extraction process involves harvesting mature juncao grass, processing it through mechanical and chemical treatments to extract cellulose fibers, and then spinning these fibers into yarn using conventional ring spinning or compact spinning equipment.
| Property | Performance |
|---|---|
| Moisture absorption | Good — comparable to cotton |
| Breathability | Excellent — natural fiber structure |
| Hand feel | Soft with natural texture |
| Durability | Moderate to good |
| Dyeability | Good — takes both natural and synthetic dyes |
| Environmental impact | Very low — fast-growing, no pesticides needed |
| Biodegradability | 100% biodegradable |
The textile industry already has several "eco-friendly" fiber options — organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, lyocell. So why should buyers consider juncao?
